The Peter’s Ice Cream factory site in West End will be redeveloped into a masterplanned community. In addition to providing 1,350 apartments, the development will incorporate retail, commercial and community uses. Amongst others, this will include a major supermarket and additional retail space, public garden, childcare centre, commercial car parking, and space to host an Artist-in-Residence program.
Charged with the civil and structural design for this landmark development, our team’s focus is to ensure the site does not become a jungle of apartment buildings. Rather, the design will embrace the central park (open to the public) and forge a seamless connection across the site.
The development includes seven towers ranging from 15 to 25 storeys, which will be supported over a public concourse area and four floors of basement car parking. Two heritage-listed factories on the site will be redeveloped as part of the project, with an aim to integrate old and new. The main Peters Ice Cream factory has had significant concrete decay over the years and will require extensive replacement and strengthening of the concrete elements.
Excavation of the four-storey basement adjacent to both the heritage structures and adjoining neighbours will require careful planning and detailing to ensure any movements or vibrations are minimised.
